ANNUAL REPORT FOR THE YEAR 2012 – 2013: In October 2012 with sponsorship from RWITC a Seminar was conducted at Turf Club House, Pune on the Sohna Stud outbreak of neurological cases in the foal crop of 2010. The speakers were Dr.B.K.Singh, Professor Utpal Tatu and Dr.S.C.Yadav.

Guidelines were laid out for prophylaxis and treatment of the surviving members of the crop. Besides members of IAEP, some breeders, owners and trainers also attended the meeting. In July 2013 Kasiak Regenerative Cellutions conducted a seminar at Turf Club House, Pune on Stem Cell Therapy in horses. Dr.Satish Tote and Dr.Phiroze Khambatta were the speakers. About 50 delegates attended the meeting. The response generated was most enthusiastic. A similar presentation had been delivered

at Bangalore Turf Club in June at the behest of IAEP. It would be pertinent to mention that Kasiak has volunteered to henceforth sponsor any continuing education ventures that the IAEP may undertake in the future. This deserves our appreciation and more importantly, our active participation.

In September 2013 your secretary was invited to attend the 150th Presidents Assembly of the World Veterinary Association at Prague, Czechoslavakia. Sadly, India is not a member of this 150 year old organization. We need to introspect as to why the Indian Veterinary community is reluctant to engage globally. The opacity in disease reporting is counterproductive, as it leads to a lack of credibility internationally. A more engaged community could help transform our approach to disease control, continuing education, movement of livestock, vaccine and drug licensing amongst other things.

In the first week of October, the Chief Veterinary Officers of the Turf Clubs, The Director, Disease Research Laboratory, members from Brookes India, Donkey Sanctuary and Kasiak Regenerative Cellutions all attended the 13th Hungary. The Indian representation was sizeable and of particular interest was Dr.Yadav’s paper presented by Dr.Rajasekhar on the Neurological outbreak in the Sohna Stud Foal crop of 2010.

Dr.Zaman of Brookes India reported that he had seen similar cases in working equids in Gurgaon and had been able to demonstrate Trypanasoma in 2 of these cases. These cases preceded the Sohna Stud outbreak. Professor Louis Touratier of the OIE who chaired this session concluded that there were still unanswered questions on this outbreak. Till such time that these questions were answered it would not be possible to state unequivocally that the Sohna Stud outbreak, was in fact, an outbreak of Surra.

In the second week of October many members of our Association participated in a seminar hosted by the Keeneland Thoroughbred Breeders Association at Westin Hotel, where Dr.Charles Scoggin, Resident Veterinarian at the historic Clairborne Stud Farm spoke on Veterinary Care of Stallions, Mares and Neonatal Foals. Ric Waldeman, renowned stallion manager of Storm Cat amongst others gave us an insight to stallion management and pedigrees.

Later in the month Dr.Anhadbir Singh Sidhu presented Professor Patrick Pollocks (of Glasgow Veterinary College) research on dynamic endoscopy in horses at Turf Club House, Pune. This was sponsored by RWITC. About 35 delegates including some trainers attended the meeting and we hope that this effort will lead to Professor Pollock and his team visiting Mumbai during the forthcoming Mumbai racing season.

The Dr.Kunchur Merit Award was presented to Dr. Ravi Reddy for his work as organising Secretary of WEVA 2011.

Dr. Zulfikar Ali, Dr.Mahima Gupta and Dr.Anhadbir Singh Sidhu have been appointed on the Website Subcommittee. Mr.Rohan More of Japalouppe Equestrian Centre has been appointed as the new Webmaster for IAEP. Any inputs from members are welcome.

Dr.Ramanathan has been appointed as adjunct faculty at the Madras Veterinary College. In this capacity he will be lecturing on an Introduction to Equines for undergraduates at the Vet School in Chennai. He has also conducted a Farrier training programme for the Tamilnadu Police in September, 2013. Dr.Khadilkar continues to give Refresher lectures to Veterinarians in the Animal Husbandry Department.

On the charitable side, Dr. Hasneyn Mirza has continued advising an NGO, “Sambhavana”, in Bangalore, which is involved with working ponies. He advises on deworming, dental care, and other basic health issues. Dr. P.T.Khambatta has continued his association with the Blue Cross Society in Pune.

The strength of our Association today stands at 157. The new Members who have joined our Association this year, are Dr. B. Gowrishankar of RWITC, Dr.Parmeshwar B. Kayande of Equus Stud Farm, Dr.Mahima Gupta who works at RWITC and Dr.Anhadbir Singh Sidhu of Starborn Stud Farm.
